Do you like relaxed farming games where you plant crops, raise animals and chat with other players while you work? Pixels is a free-to-play social farming MMO on the Ronin network that runs in your browser, with a big shared world, guilds and team events, and optional land and pets as NFTs.
What is Pixels?
Pixels is an open-world pixel-art game about farming, crafting and exploring together. You start with a small plot of land, grow crops, gather wood and ore, and turn raw materials into goods in town. Other players are everywhere, and the main town of Terravilla is usually busy with chat and trading.
The studio counts more than 10 million players, and the game runs on Ronin, the same network as Axie Infinity. New content arrives roughly every two weeks, and the client code is open source, so modders can build their own versions of the game’s front end.
How Does Pixels Work?
Almost everything you do costs energy. Every player has 1,000 energy, and when it runs low your character slows down. You top it up with food and drinks you make yourself, a visit to the sauna, or energy parties hosted by other players.
The core loop is simple. You plant and harvest, care for animals, chop trees and mine, then use crafting stations to make better tools and goods. The Task Board in town takes orders for specific items, which gives your farming a goal beyond filling your storage.
On top of that sit social systems. Guilds share land and work toward common goals, and in the current chapter, Bountyfall, players join one of three unions (Wildgroves, Seedwrights or Reapers) that compete in team events. Side modes such as Pixel Dungeons and the Spore Sports minigames add some variety.
Digital Collectibles in Pixels
The main NFTs are farms. There are 5,000 NFT farms along the Rainbow Road, and owners can customize them and use them for extra production. Free players get a smaller Speck farm instead, which covers the basics of planting, animals and resources. Pets and avatars from partner NFT collections are the other collectibles.
The game’s token is $PIXEL on Ronin. It pays for the optional VIP membership (about $10 a month), which adds marketplace listing slots, extra tasks and inventory space. You can play Pixels without owning any NFT or token, but you will see both in the game’s economy.
Getting Started in Pixels
Open play.pixels.xyz in your browser and sign up with your email address or phone number. A Ronin Wallet is optional and you can connect one later. The game costs nothing to start.
In your first session, follow the tutorial quests, plant your first crops on your Speck and check the Task Board in Terravilla for easy orders. Good to know: keep an eye on your energy bar in the top left corner, because you can’t farm or gather without it.
