Do you enjoy strategic card battlers with deep collection mechanics? Axie Infinity Origins is a free-to-play card game built around Axies, collectible fantasy creatures with body parts that determine your entire deck. Developed by Sky Mavis on the Ronin blockchain, it’s the most battle-tested Web3 game running.

What is Axie Infinity Origins?

Axie Infinity Origins is developed by Sky Mavis, a Vietnam-based studio founded by Trung Nguyen and Aleksander Larsen. Origins is a complete overhaul of the original Axie game, with a free-to-play path and combat rebuilt around a card-based system. The game runs on Ronin, Sky Mavis’s dedicated gaming blockchain.

The Axie ecosystem now spans three titles. Origins is the competitive card battler. Homeland is a land-based settlement builder where players develop plots in Lunacia. Atia’s Legacy is an upcoming mobile and PC MMO with real-time squad combat, currently in closed playtests. The original Axie Classic no longer gets official development, and Sky Mavis has handed its future to the community.

How Does Axie Infinity Origins Work?

Each Axie has six body parts: eyes, ears, mouth, horn, back, and tail. Each part corresponds to a card in your battle deck, so the Axies you own define your available moves. You bring three Axies into each match, managing energy across turns to play cards, trigger combos, and control a lane-based battlefield. Skill expression comes from card sequencing and energy management, not just stat totals.

Seasonal competitive play drives the core loop. Each season runs roughly 30 days with ranked ladders and leaderboard rewards, paid out in bAXS. Offseason content includes Tower Mode, Guardian quests, and Starter Mode for new players learning the system without NFT investment.

Breeding lets you combine two Axies to produce offspring with mixed traits, which is how new Axies with competitive or rare part combinations enter the market. Each Axie can breed a limited number of times, keeping supply from inflating infinitely.

Digital Collectibles in Axie Infinity Origins

Axies are ERC-721 NFTs on Ronin, tradable on the Axie Marketplace or third-party Ronin-compatible markets. Body part rarity runs from Common through Rare, Ultra Rare, and Mystic, with Mystic parts carrying permanent scarcity since no new ones can be created.

The token economy uses three layers. AXS is the governance and long-term value token. SLP (Smooth Love Potion) is the breeding resource, spent to produce new Axies. Ranked play in Origins no longer pays out SLP (since January 2026), a change aimed at bot farming. bAXS is a non-transferable in-app token backed 1:1 by AXS, paid out as seasonal competitive rewards and spendable on breeding, ascending, evolving, and marketplace activity. The bAXS system ties reward outflows to an Axie Score reputation system, so long-term active players convert rewards at better rates than new accounts, directly targeting bot farming.

The free-to-play path uses Starter Axies, which are non-NFT and non-tradable but fully functional for learning the game and climbing early ladder ranks.
