Do you want an open-world RPG where the creatures you capture are NFTs you actually own, tradable on a real marketplace? Illuvium is a sci-fi creature-collection game built on Immutable zkEVM, developed by Illuvium Labs. It spans three connected titles, with Arena as the auto-battler you can play today, Overworld being rebuilt as a multiplayer MMO, and Beyond for cosmetic NFT collecting.

What is Illuvium?

Illuvium was founded by brothers Kieran and Aaron Warwick and developed by Sydney-based Illuvium Labs. After years of development it reached a playable state, which makes it one of the highest-production Web3 games around. Its NFT collections run on Immutable zkEVM, which keeps transactions fast and cheap for players, and ILV staking (Staking V3) runs on Base as well as Ethereum mainnet.

Overworld is the studio’s main focus right now. It is being turned from a solo exploration game into an MMO Lite: a multiplayer creature-capturing experience with shared open-world areas, instanced sessions, Leviathan raids, and NPC interactions, built on existing mechanics rather than rebuilt from scratch. That version is in closed alpha testing.

How Does Illuvium Work?

Illuvium runs as three separate but connected games sharing the same asset ecosystem.

Overworld is the open-world RPG. You play as a Ranger crash-landed on an alien planet, exploring seven regions across a visually dense sci-fi landscape. Illuvials are creatures you encounter, weaken in combat, and capture using Shards. Each Illuvial has an affinity (Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Nature) and a class (Fighter, Guardian, Rogue, Psion, Empath), and combining Illuvials with matching affinities or classes creates synergy bonuses in battle. The Forge lets you craft and upgrade weapons and suits, with 40 weapon lines that evolve through stages. Daily, weekly, and event missions track progress and reward ILV airdrop points.

Arena is the standalone auto-battler. You draft a team of Illuvials and watch them battle automatically, with your strategic input coming from pre-battle positioning, synergy selection, and equipment. Competitive seasons run with leaderboards and ILV prize pools, and the Gauntlet tournament format adds organised PvP competition.

Beyond is the cosmetic NFT layer. Disk packs contain cosmetic items, skins, and accessories for Rangers and Illuvials across periodic sale waves.

Digital Collectibles in Illuvium

Illuvials are ERC-721 NFTs on Immutable zkEVM, tradable on the Illuvium marketplace and third-party Immutable-compatible platforms. Each captured Illuvial is unique: its combination of affinity, class, stage (Illuvials can evolve through three stages by fusing three copies), and finish (Standard, Holo, Dark, or Rainbow) makes every high-tier specimen genuinely scarce.

ILV is the governance and staking token on Ethereum and Base, earning rewards through Staking V3 and giving holders DAO voting rights on major game decisions. sILV is the in-game spending token usable immediately without lockup periods, covering fuel costs and marketplace purchases. Illuvium Beyond Disks are cosmetic NFT packs sold in limited waves.

Free-to-play access covers exploration and Arena matches without requiring NFT Illuvials. Capturing tradable NFT Illuvials requires Shards, which can be crafted in-game from resources gathered during exploration.

Getting Started in Illuvium

Download the game client free at illuvium.io for PC. Create an account and connect an Ethereum-compatible wallet to access NFT features, though the game is explorable without one. Your first session is best spent in Arena: play the tutorial matches to learn drafting, positioning and synergies before you queue for ranked. To trade Illuvials, set up an Immutable Passport wallet via the in-game prompt. Arena is accessible separately as a standalone download.
